On Her Watch by Melinda Leigh

5.0

Sheriff Bree Taggert is alerted to the discovery of a tarp-wrapped body in a clearing in the woods by two hikers. When a more profound search occurs, it becomes clear to Sheriff Taggert that this spot is a serial killer’s dumping ground. With the help of investigator Matt Flynn, Bree works the case and goes to interview Jana, the best friend of one of the victims. When they arrive at Jana’s home, they find it ransacked and set on fire. Jana is also missing. It’s clear that the killer is escalating, particularly when the killer threatens Bree’s family.

It’s been a minute since I’ve read a Bree Taggert book, but this one was an easy binge. This is book eight in the Bree Taggert series, set in Randolph County. While each book is, in theory, a standalone, I’d highly recommend starting from the beginning and getting to know Bree and see her character progression as the series evolves.

I’ve loved Bree as the main character of this series from the very first book and was delighted to catch up with her here. She’s an excellent sheriff for her county – always getting to the bottom of the case and always fighting for what’s right for the community and the workplace. She doesn’t stand down and let workplace politics win over which is something that is truly admirable and not everyone can withstand such pressures. The character and relationship progressions in this novel are a continuation from previous books, but it is so nice to see each character grow as well as the relationships they share deepen – Melinda Leigh does an excellent job with this.

The setting is well described, vivid, and easily immerses the reader into a muddy spring. The plot of ON HER WATCH is tense, thrilling, fast-paced, and has a good number of twists that kept me guessing until the end! Can’t wait to see what comes next in book 9!
