This was a nice little collection of singles & samplers for Free Comic Book Day.
Started off with a short little story set in the magical world within the film Labyrinth. Ludo feels sick and he traverses all of Labyrinth-land to find comfort. It's beautifully drawn but the story is nothing great. I loved seeing so many familiar faces and I wonder if there's any chance for an extended story with these characters... I'm sure for FCBD, they wanted something simple they could wrap up in six pages, so we're left with this silly little story, but I'd love to see [a:Cory Godbey|2789848|Cory Godbey|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] draw more interesting stories in this world...
Next up was probably my favorite of the six stories—Mouse Guard. It tells the story of a lonely little mouse, Celanawe, who himself journals about a book he read. This story within the story is all about Piper the Listener—a mouse who travels far and wide & learns to speak to all sorts of different animals. From the Mole to the Heron, from the Toad to the Serpent, she learns a valuable lesson—"Because you do not understand a creature doesn't mean they haven't anything important to say."
Third is a teaser of a new comic coming out this July—[b:The Cloud|27778634|The Cloud|Kostas Zachopoulos|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1457284695s/27778634.jpg|47755899]. The comic is drawn fantastically (in both senses of the word) but the story itself has little room to grow in 10 pages. Seems like at least two people are after a "wishing stone" but a wise & mysterious writer warns against using it incorrectly. There may be an interesting story behind this, but these 10 pages didn't hook me enough to buy any new books.
Next is a six-page Adventure Time story. I’ve never watched Jake & Finn so I don’t know much about them, but this seems like a cute little adventure.
Wrapping up the issue are two other sneak peeks into recently released comics. [b:Lumberjanes|21876672|Lumberjanes #1|Noelle Stevenson|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1403779871s/21876672.jpg|46062482]'s "Don’t Axe, Don’t Tale" is a bright and cartoony look at (what I assume) is a Girl-Scout-y like troupe of girls with a lot of different archetypes. They identify edible plants, tell ghost stories, and (I’m sure) get into crazy misadventures. [b:Goldie Vance|28953805|Goldie Vance|Hope Larson|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1458692655s/28953805.jpg|49178913]'s "Crossed Palms Resort" is the other story about a girl detective at a luxury hotel. The art makes it feel like it's set in the ‘50s and there are a wide cast of characters introduced in these six short pages. Looks like it could be a fun series!
