Demon, Volume 4 by Jason Shiga

3.0

A relatively weak ending to an otherwise amazing series. The problem with this volume is mostly that the stakes are practically non-existent. This plays nicely with the rampant nihilism that's present throughout the series but it also cheapens the resolution a great deal and makes the ending very unsatisfying. Still, the way there is a ton of fun and this one has the largest and bloodiest action sequence yet (though not the most fun one - those still belong to vols 1 and 3). I get what Shiga was doing with the ending, and it is themetically cohesive...but it just wasn't as fun to read as the earlier volumes.

This is such an amazing premise though, I'd love to see it adapted for the screen. It'd make Tarantino look pretty tame.

Ps: the dedications in these books are a worthy arc in themselves:

1: To my wife, alina, who begged me not to dedicate this book to her

2: To my wife, alina, who’s still mad at me for dedicating the first volume to her

3: To my wife, alina, who’s threatened to divorce me if I dedicate one more book to her

4: To kazuo, tell mommy I miss her
