The Glassmaker
by Tracy Chevalier
Historical fiction with themes of lost love, family and feminism.
Orsola is the daughter of a glassmaker on the island of Murano, Italy. Women don’t make glass, but Orsola is determined to carve her own path.
Chevalier adopts an elastic timeline for this story which I initially wasn’t sure about, but now I’ve finished the book I actually rather liked how we saw Murano over a much wider time period without jumping from protagonist to protagonist.
There’s a lot to like about this book. I feel like I’ve been back to Venice after reading it.
