Where to start... This was the spiciest book I have read...ever. That wouldn't be saying much, considering I'm cis het man, and not the target audience, but I'm saying it anyway. That's not a declaration of unenjoyment. I have zero qualms about the spice. This is romantasy after all. Also, huge shout to the author for their careful and sensitive representation for OCD (something they themselves seem to live with according to the afterword at the end). The author does a great job presenting Ophelia's struggle in a caring way, and mental health representation is something I always applaud.
That all said, the book was great. I enjoyed the story and the different levels of the competition. The twist wasn't super hidden, but was handled well. My biggest gripes, and there are only two that aren't really that big, are and the magic system. The magic system feels too powerful sometimes (Blackwell's healing and snapping things out of nowhere) and too week at some points (I can do THIS amazing thing, but I can't do this little thing, that's outside of my abilities). They don't detract from the story, they just require a little more belief suspension than might be required otherwise.
All in all, I am happy this was my first BOTM purchase and I'm looking forward to Enchantra next year.
