I don’t remember liking this book very much the first time I read it. This time, I enjoyed it much better, primarily because it had a quicker pace and was more thrilling than Queste and Syren.

As usual, the dialogue is poor and I continue to find Jenna an annoying hag but as usual the story is intriguing and often humorous. During the first part of the book, Septimus was still irritatingly whiny (he’s been particularly whiny and full of self-pity the last two books) but he seems to have recovered by the end of this story.

Angie Sage is definitely a master at creating a new world, intriguing characters, and vivid scenes but her dialogue can be so bad, I often skip parts of it as I’m reading it loud to my youngest.
