Peter Pan in Scarlet
by Geraldine McCaughrean
I’ve had this book on my bookshelf for literally 12 years, but I finally read it this year and it was SO dumb.
As a huge Peter Pan fan, I can’t believe this was the selected sequel for the original story that they literally held a contest for. The characters are so underdeveloped, the story is ridiculous, and the ending was so lame. The amount of times the characters almost “died” was insane. Also tinker bell showing up just to immediately fall in love with this random fairy that eats buttons and ignore everyone else?? I also don’t get why the twins and all the lost boys are still called first twin and second twin and curly and nibs as adults?? There was no thought and care in this book at all it honestly makes me mad lol. It did not hold onto any of the charm of the original and just felt preachy. The Hook/Ravello moment was predictable from the second he was mentioned.
The interior illustrations were horrendous, and the cover is pretty but misleading. It looks more like the cover of a middle grade book that will be more trendy and modern instead of a horrible attempt at a classic continuation.
Peter and the Starcatchers is the one true prequel and continuation in my opinion, don’t waste your time with this one.
