I was very confused while reading this book, but also very engaged. Banana Yoshimoto has a way of spinning the simplest yet most complex stories and I really enjoyed reading! The only thing I’ll say is if you haven’t read Japanese fiction, maybe don’t start with this one. There’s a theme in Japanese literature (at least one I’ve seen) of magical realism and you kind of have to abandon yourself to it as you read.
