I'll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara

dark informative reflective medium-paced

5.0

I earlier thought that Truman Capote is the king of true crime reportage, but Michelle McNamara has proved me wrong. I really have no words to review this amazing compilation of her thoughts and investigation and dogged determination to nab the Golden State Killer, giving up on her personal life and working through thousands of pages of police reports even though she was a mere civilian. The foreword of the book by Gillian Flynn made me tear up. The afterword by her husband made me believe in love again. Yes, this book is not merely about murder and rape (major trigger warnings). It's about collaboration, communication and courage as well. And a random snippet of humour too.
A must-read. Not just for people who want to know more about the reign of terror led by the depraved man who we now know is the Golden State Killer, but for people who are in general interested in true crime.
