Secret Service

2.5 stars
I enjoyed Tal Bauer's [b:The Murder Between Us|56786433|The Murder Between Us (A Noah & Cole Thriller, #1)|Tal Bauer|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1611353815l/56786433._SX50_.jpg|88762936] and [b:The Grave Between Us|58018735|The Grave Between Us (A Noah & Cole Thriller, #2)|Tal Bauer|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1622512941l/58018735._SY75_.jpg|90921578], but Secret Service just didn't work for me.
I did like the suspense plot and the structure; the back and forth between "then" and "now" worked and I was invested in the "now" timeline. But the romance was ... not good. Between the insta-lust, the telling rather than showing, the over-top-melodrama and the truly cringeworthy prose (so purple it was almost black!) - it was unbelievable and often ridiculous.
Maybe it's the reserved Brit in me, but I wanted to laugh half the time, and shy away from the too-flowery language the other half.
And WTF was all that at the end with Sheridan? I really liked his character, but given his "to the end of time" love for Reese, for Reese to then invite him to dinner with him and Brennan and to basically be a part of their lives just seemed... cruel. (Other reviews mention thinking they might end up as a throuple, and I can definitely see why - I'm not into MMM, but I absolutely thought Sheridan got the fuzzy end of the lollipop there!)
I'll read more by this author, but this book wasn't for me.
