Sunrise on the Reaping
by Suzanne Collins
man what the hell... poor Haymitch...
Thought the story was a little far fetched at times, with Haymitch somehow engineering the breaking of the arena, and the seemingly random killing of the Gamemakers. felt a little rushed at times. also felt like a bit of a repeat of songbirds and snakes with the Covey integration and song... I'm nitpicking.
HOWEVER!
I really really enjoyed this! I was so so excited for this as its been something i dreamed about ever since i read about Haymitch's games when i was like, 10? (shout out to that short film about his games lol). so fun to just pick up a new Hunger Games story in 2025 and be as lost in it as I was as a child. Written with breakneck pace. So interesting to see how the Games changed over the years to become even more difficult for tributes to rebel.
Haymitch's backstory is mind meltingly tragic, it adds a layer to his character that was honestly needed, his grumpiness cast in an entirely new light. Poor guy. So excited for the movie!
