Black Beauty by Anna Sewell
2.0

Gah, this was sad. I have a lovely little collection of classics that I’m making my way through, so this became more of a “just so I can say I read it” situation.

Black Beauty is narrated by the titular character over the course of a large portion of his life. Going by different names as he changes hands, the horse gives an insight into the hows and whys of a horse’s temperament. I can’t believe I just wrote that. Basically, he’s like, I had this awful master so don’t do what he did, but then this other guy was wonderful so do this.

Black Beauty was owned by some good people, but mainly a lot of bad men who misused him. I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that it ends happy (you kinda have to believe that to get through the dang thing), but at what cost?!

2.5/5 because the voice was really lovely, and the characters were interesting.
