By 2024 standards, it is, of course, longer than it needs to be. However, I don't think you can fault it for that and you have to kind of consider it in the context of being written in 1605.
But considering the books age (400+ years) it is incredibly funny and often quite clever. Really hard not to love the main characters of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.
The translation by Edith Grossman is outstanding to read.
