Double Dare
by R.L. Mathewson
This is one of the only books that I did not like of this series. I did not hate it, there were just some things that left a bad taste in my mouth. For example, Marybeth would put down girls that Darrin dated who were not okay with her and Darrin's relationship.... Of course they were not okay with it! Marybeth and Darrin were constantly on-again, off-again and even when they were off they had a friends with benefits situation. Any self respecting girl would have a problem with her boyfriend spending so much time with the woman he was actually in love with but couldn't be with and who he had a sexual relationship with. Darrin was also at fault for putting these women in this kind of situation where the only end result would be them getting hurt. It was selfish.
Just as selfish was the way that Marybeth would keep Darrin on a fishing line. When he got too close, she would send him out but if he got too far, she would reel him back in. I hated this, it was manipulative, frustrating and showed such a lack of confidence in a person she is supposed to think the world of. I was so annoyed at the way Marybeth just decided Darrin's feelings for him. He is a grown ass man, give him all the information then trust him to make his OWN decision. Its just as sexist for a woman to overrule decisions an adult man make about his own life as it is sexist for a man to overrule decisions an adult woman makes about her own life. Marybeth does not have the right to decide for Darrin what he can or can't be okay with. This is not to say that Darrin is innocent either, he isn't. He should have put his foot down ages ago, he should not have dated other woman when he was so clearly not over Marybeth, he should not have continued to put himself in this situation.
All in all. They drove me crazy and I couldn't even muck up all that much enthusiasm when they finally got together. Danny and Jodi and the couples from the other books were the best part.
