The Flash, Vol. 5: History Lessons by Brian Buccellato

3.0

This fifth volume of the N52 Flash seems to have been a placeholder as the book changed creative teams, which is why it feels very much like filler.

The annual, which sees Barry team up with his old mate Hal Jordan, was alright, but I’ve seen better storylines for both of these characters. Christos Gage shows up to write an issue where he spends way too much time explaining how Flash’s powers work, while also forgetting that Barry lost his crime lab job.

The centerpiece of the trade is the History Lessons three parter, a murder mystery featuring honest to goodness ghosts. This one was pretty good, and I would’ve liked to see Brian Buccellato explore this mystery and its connection to the Gem Cities’ origins in more detail. Deadman fans will be happy to see him here, too.
