A Very Vegas St. Patrick's Day
by Connor Crais, Kayley Loring
3.5 Stars
Oh how I have anticipated this book. The Very Holiday series is my VERY favorite from the always hilarious Kayley Loring. Merging the charm of the various holidays with the quirky eccentricities of her unusual characters makes for the perfect backdrop for all their silly antics and sexy fun, and the first two books in the series are two of her best books. They are witty and charming, well paced romances that balance her sizzle with her sweet and make clever use of her creative narrative approaches. And the characters- well I just love them. Which is why I was so excited for this- and Irish holiday for one of our hilarious Irish family members. Bring in her new dynamic writing partner, Conor Crais, and I was super pumped.
So it pains me to say I was a bit disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed reading this story, but it didn't quite have the same emotive depth or narrative polish I've come to expect from a Kayley Loring story. Truthfully, perhaps (unfairly) the mounting anticipation of this story played into my expectations- it's been a year since I've gotten to play in this world, and again, I mad respect both of these authors. It is out of my love for them that I rounded this rating up- because I do so love these characters and this world.
The bones are all there- and Nolan is fantastic- and so much more than I expected from the glimpses we've seen. He's swoony and sweet, patient and loyal. I really adored him, and he's definitely worth reading the book for. We have some great humorous moments, all that fun witty fodder I love about Kayley stories, and some sweet moments, too. I wasn't crazy about Cora- she felt a bit too stubborn when it came to denying the dreamboat Nolan, but she grew on me.
But overall, the narrative felt disjointed and choppy in places- perhaps this was intentional, or the growing pains of a new writing partnership. But it felt like disconnected vignettes at times, the timeline was unclear in places, and I felt we missed both the richness of setting and depth of character connection I deeply admire about Kayley stories, whereas romcom authors often scrimp on substance to bring humor, she's always brought depth of heart. This is more instalove that never quite deepened for me.
The fun is here- and I did enjoy reading this book- and I'm sure you will too. Just for me, this didn't quite live up to the fantasticness of the others in the series- but I'm sure hoping we get more of this series, because it is still my favorite of hers!
