I love this book!! The impressively researched novel covers 20 years of the life of Pei, a Chinese girl sent to work in a silk factory during the first part of the 20th Century. Her family could not afford to keep her and thus drops her off at the factory one day, eager for her wages which will be sent home to them. She makes close friends however, although a tragic fire at the factory forever changes her life.
