City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare

5.0

So, I spent almost two years reading this entire series because the first three books were kind of dull. Simon Lewis, my favorite character, always ended up beaten, broken down, dead or worse and it got me very, very angry. He didn't have a fair writing when it came to his character and it showed. Until the fourth book came out, that is. Then, he freaking started saving everyone and being incredible and he still wasn't anyone's favorite but mine, people preferred brooding, sharp-witted Jace Lightwood over him, which baffles me, because nobody would date a guy like that, and I'm certain of it. But let's leave it to the fact that Jace is described as perfect, with a perfect body, perfect hair, perfect everything while Simon is just... skinny. I don't really care about it, though. The fact that he ended up with the hottest girl in the saga just proves my point. Simon deserved Izzy, while Clary and Jace just kinda gravitated towards each other and everyone expected them to be together eventually, damn the incestuous storyline to hell.

Anyway, this book, though. I have to state this as a very important fact: I strongly dislike Jace Wayland, Lightwood, Herondale, whatever the hell his name is. I also don't like Clary enough for me to really care about what happened to her. But this book changed this for me, and so did the last book. Their relationship with Sebastian was so riveting I couldn't help but root for the fact that they did know him and knew how to bring him down, and I know Clary isn't an idiot, and neither is Jace, which is a relief because honestly, Sebastian is an evil genius. I don't mean to be spoilery but you know who I started to like and then disliked abruptly? Maia. Like, honestly, girl, if you don't like a guy, don't take him to bed. Stop lying to each other, stop the miscommunication and talk to him, because well. He might get killed in front of you at some point. (Well, to be fair, at least he died thinking Maia did love him?) Luke and Jocelyn are my relationship goals. Magnus and Alec broke my HEART I thought they weren't my OTP and I found myself crying when they found each other again and well, that just proved it for me. And then there was everything that happened to Simon at the end of the book and that just keeps proving my point: Simon is the true hero of these books. He always sacrifices himself for the greater good, he is as selfless as an angel and he just doesn't get enough credit. I ended up bawling my brains out, I couldn't believe he had lost everything like that, and then he didn't, and I cried out of happiness. Like... It's ridiculous how much I cried for that boy in this book. I just wanted Simon to be happy, okay? And he kinda got it? The fact that he's going to ascend astounds me, he's finally going to learn how to fight and I always knew he would be the perfect Shadowhunter.

But enough about Simon. This book was fantastic, Sebastian was the perfect evil bastard and each and every character showed their own weight in the fight and in dire situations. Like Alec, he just shined through and through this whole book. I loved each and every character because they all proved their worth, it was magnificent, even though there were some that were less on the book than others, like Magnus. But at the end of the day he did have a plan to get them all out of Edom, which is typical Magnus. He's just so great.

I'll recommend this entire saga 100% just because of how great these characters are, how great the universe is and how well written the battle scenes are. Honestly, those battles were riveting as hell. Valentine was a weak villain, but Sebastian? He was just so disgusting, I loved being disgusted by him. He's just so creepy.
