Waiting for Sunrise by William Boyd

I must be missing something. This was a relatively straightforward spy thriller, set just before and during the First World War. A bit of military action, a bit of psycho-analysis and a bit of sex. But, unless there was a sub-text or allegory that passed me by, that's all it was.

I believe that Boyd will be writing the next James Bond and, based on this, it will be very good but... that's about it.

Did I miss something?
