Chesapeake by James A. Michener
3.0
James Michener's Chesapeake follows the fortunes and misfortunes of a few families in the fictional Choptank region over a period of more than 300 years. It is a good enough story line, but stretching it out over so long prevents him from really developing the characters. They generally remain somewhat wooden and one-dimensional.
He treats his charactors with empathy, particularly the black family, yet writes overly sympathetically about white characters that often have horrific attitudes.
Maybe it's just a story that hasn't aged well.
