Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

5.0

...my point is that the only authentic identity for the African is the tribe...I am Nigerian because a white man created Nigeria and gave me that identity. I am black because the white man constructed black to be as different as possible from his white. But I was Igbo before the white man came.

4,5☆ Heavy stuff.

Half of a Yellow Sun was chilling, sad, impactful, scary and utterly captivating.
It taught me so much about Nigeria's culture and history, and I'm genuinly glad that I picked it up. I found myself researching more about the Biafran War and just Nigeria in general out of sheer curiosity, gradually getting to know the land a bit better with each search. But the way it handled the atrocities of war were also incredible. The description of this war was heartbreakingly ugly and as bad as it sounds; it did it well. It made me aware of what was happening to millions of people of Nigeria, in a civil war I had absolutely no idea even existed. I just can't believe I've never heard of it before and I can now confidently say that I do.
Though slow with its story progression, this book still had me hooked because of the well-written characters that really made you feel like you KNOW them.

After finishing Half of a Yellow Sun I discovered that it has a film adaptation which I immediately started watching. The book was great. The movie on the other hand? Terrible. I regretted watching it.
