The Rose and the Thorn
by Michael J. Sullivan
Took a break at 48% and almost DNF
I’m reading this series for the first time and I’m reading in chronological order.
My biggest gripe with the book is the character Rueben. I find his adoration of Arista very upsetting. Like he adores her and fantasizes about her falling in love with him a lot for someone who has never even met her. I’m unsure if this is supposed to be romantic or if it’s the start of a arch where he puts her on a pedestal and it’s framed as bad.
After he does meet her and she really isn’t like how he imagined her he still doesn’t change his view of her. He still has the same daydreams about her.
It wouldn’t be that big of an issue if this wasn’t the A plot of the book and we spend a lot of time with Rueben.
The B plot with Royce and Hadrian is great and I had no issues with it. The characters are great.
It really is just Rueben that’s the issue with this book.
