A Sudden Light by Garth Stein

Wow- I loved The Art Racing in the Rain and this book was totally different- but a great read. When Trevor's parents marriage is on the rocks and he is sent with his dad to the old homestead out on Puget Sound, he doesn't know what he is in for. His dad has "issues", his grandad has dementia and his aunt Serena is more than a little off. I loved the way Stein developed the characters. Each one is so different and has a very specific role in the novel- not just placeholders.

The natural beauty of the estate, the whole history of the timber industry and of course family drama are all seamlessly interwoven in this book. I was shocked at the ending, but perhaps it had to be that way...

Read it, you'll like it.
