Stormbringer? More like Chuuya's Hat Lore...

5/5 stars

I sit down to write the review of this book while jamming to my Chuuya character playlist...so maybe this is a bit bias. I will be the first to admit that at the very least. My profile picture is literally me in a Chuuya cosplay... It's majorly bias. Let's ignore that; Where do I even begin with this?

This light novel explores what happens after the events of "Fifteen" and explores Chuuya's past and how he came to be. Being as Chuuya is my favorite characters... like ever? I really enjoyed being able to learn more about him, his ability, and how that all manifested within the storyline.

"Light" novel... this was single handedly one of the heaviest things I've ever read. Chuuya's life hasn't been an easy one and it's not easy to read about in the slightest. He's been through some of the hardest things anyone in this universe has been through. I may or may not have cried on the couch after finishing this one. No spoilers, but damn this thing is worth reading.

The way this novel explores loss, trauma, and grief? It quite literally left me speechless. I have few words I can say on this point, but I needed to point it out. Because just.... wow!

Despite it being a translation, the writing was still impeccable. Asagiri's skill really shines in this work and the translating team did a great job as well. I originally tried to read a fan translation of this when the original Japanese version came out and it just did NOT do this justice. Major props to the translation team here, it is not an easy feat to properly translate and keep the integrity of the work. The story flowed excellently and even moments that would be a Deus Ex Machina in other novels/media was all perfectly justified with additional details given. Asagiri nailed this one, that's for sure.

I could keep going but I am going to just make myself stop blabbing. I take these GoodReads reviews a little too seriously probably, but it's a part of the fun. Nakahara Chuuya is a gem and I love him. That is all.
