Roses in Amber by C.E. Murphy

5.0

C. E. Murphy is one of my favorite contemporary authors. Everything she does is great, and this is no exception. This is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast with a few twists on the tale. I love this kind of shit. Hit me with a retelling of fairy tales that puts a new spin on things and I am one happy camper. The general skeleton of the tale is there. There is a beast in an enchanted castle. There is a woman who selflessly agrees to live with him. They grow closer, and fall in love, and in the end the woman has to break his curse. Everything else, however, is different. Delicious.

One of the things that I especially love about this book is how casually queer everybody is. Like, it's set in a fictional kingdom and queerness is just a normal part of culture. It's not uncommon for men to take up husbands, and women to take up wives. It's not *remarkable* in any way. So few books do this kind of thing, especially queer fantasy books, where queerness is the norm and is as casual as straightness is.

I definitely recommend checking this one out, and all her other books *especially* the Walker Papers. It's basically Harry Dresden with a female lead set in Seattle. Good stuff all around. 5 stars.
