Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman
4.0

Great novel that is an easy fast read full of great characters. I loved the movie growing up and just learned it was a novel. It is a bit different than the film.

Sally and Gillian are sisters who were raised by their aunts who have a long bloodline filled with magic. The girls lost their parents very young and are as different as night and day. Gillian grows up breaking hearts all across country and Sally the careful one falls in love and starts a family in the town she was raised. But disaster will disturb both sisters. Sally is tormented by a beetle that is counting down the hours until her husband dies. After being overcome by grief she takes her girls and moves somewhere new where no one knows anything about their family to get a fresh start. Gillian becomes consumed by a mean drunk of devilish man named Jimmy. The sisters reunite when Jimmy dies and Sally helps Gillian bury the body. But he still haunts them from the grave and they need more than just their magic to get rid of him. The aunts help them and do a bit extra to bring Sally love again with detective looking into the case.
