Our Frail Disordered Lives by Mary M. Schmidt

5.0

Is there such thing as 'hilarious horror??' Well, if not, there is now. This was SO not what I expected - it was quirky and dark, fun and disturbing and I loved it from start to finish!

I mean, what other story has the devil himself, a signing competition reality show, exorcisms, 2 super-intuitive cats, a possessed goody two-shoes church girl, a demon who is great with computers and another of the devils minions, crazy bitter cause he didn't get to be a star in Dante's Inferno??

The cast of characters are a bunch of really dis-likeable people, and I loved to hate them. I actually loved the demons and found them to be the most fun part of the story! Demon Roach is bitter with Satan. He wanted to be the star of Dante's Inferno and wasn't even mentioned, so he is basically a nobody and holding a MAJOR grudge. He tries so hard to get people back on Earth to sell their souls, and do bad things to stir up trouble, just so he can prove how useful he can be. But when mortal Larry sells his soul to the devil at Roaches insistence, Roach becomes involved in the craziest chain of events he couldn't have staged even if he tried. Between slimy Larry and the wife who kicked him out, her sister who always hated Larry, and an old school mate who hated the sisters - the wild ride these people embark on, all at the hand of a demon gone rogue, is seriously fun and at times hilarious.

A unique and clever tale of making a deal with the devil and the consequences that ensue. A really entertaining read!
