The Wide Window by Lemony Snicket
4.0

I'm always surprised at Snicket's ability to make his books work on two levels; children are entertained by the action driven plot, and adults are entertained by cynical banter. For example: "It would be difficult to tell you what the moral of the story is. The moral of "The Three Bears," for instance, is "never break into someone else's house." The moral of World War One is "never assassinate Archduke Ferdinand." The narration style is effortlessly funny, as the author inserts his alter ego into the story, complementing the overarching aurora of mystery and improbability.

Funny, cynical and well written, what more can you ask for.
