The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren
3.0
hopeful lighthearted medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Loveable characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

I picked up The Soulmate Equation because the premise sounded fun, and I needed something light to read on my holiday. The female lead was well written and easy to root for, but the build-up to the romance was much more enjoyable than the romance itself. The early tension worked really well, even if the characters didn’t have the strongest chemistry (just because they don’t like each other in the start of the book doesn’t instantly equate to characters having strong chemistry guys). I also liked how the book explored bigger ideas about love, relationships, and whether science can measure something like soulmates. That part was genuinely engaging.

Once the characters actually started dating, though, things got corny and clunky. Huge proclamations of love and public kissing scenes felt awkward and over the top, which pulled me out of the story. I don’t actually really know why they liked each other, like they had very minor things in common, and they both seemed like decent people. But if this book was about compatibility, then the above was not enough to sell me. Other than, you know, they’re both hot.

Overall, it was a fun concept with a strong start, but the romance didn’t land as well as it could have. So this was a very easy but forgettable 3/5 stars.
