As usual, TJR hit it out of the park once again. Evelyn Hugo is one of my favorite books of all time, and pretty early on in this one I thought this might break me more than Evelyn Hugo did. And boy did it, but it put my back together again in the end. This is about love and hope, and the thought that you can’t ask too much out of life. You can ask for as much as you want and need, and you just might get it all. I was utterly sobbing at the end, and so in love with these characters throughout the book. Joan and Vanessa are fantastic together and I’m so glad they had people in their corner. The aspect of being queer in the ‘80s was very well done and the question/struggles of coming out were so fleshed out - it was extremely relatable and there are passages that will stand the test of time.
