Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay
5.0

I truly enjoyed this fictional window into the Tang Dynasty of China. Kay's prose is beautiful. He cleverly uses voice and tense to shift between the perspectives of individual characters and to set a new scene. The story moves in both shocking and delightful directions, which kept me enthralled page after page. I admire the well-developed main character, Shen Tai, who is an unintentional hero. He is naive and ernest, loveable. The women in this story are strong, which can be difficult to convey is such a patriarchal period of history, but Kay paints the women in hues of grace, intelligence and strength. I highly recommend this book.
