Year of the Tiger: An Activist's Life by Alice Wong

4.0

This was a really difficult book to read. I felt very called out for my privilege, my ableism, and all the ways I have failed the disabled community. As challenging as it is to face, it's important to recognize where we fall short so that we continue to improve. I want to do better for my community, I want to take care of everyone, and I believe everyone has worth. As Alice Wong says, access is love!

Wong is a quick wit. She's intelligent, quippy, snarky, honest, direct, and funny. I immediately want to be her friend but I do fear I'm nowhere near as interesting enough to keep her friendship! Her writing seems to fully embody her and this mishmash of a memoir feels more like a journal, or as another reviewer said, a scrapbook. It feels like a perfect representation of Wong herself: a little bit goofy, a little messy at times, but full of heart and full of rage.

This is a book that everyone should read. It's not a book that everyone will like but that's kind of the point. No one likes to confront their shortcomings but how else will you grow?
