What a lovely empowering and introspective story this was. We follow Summer, a young native girl who lives in America but alongside her family, returns to her Cree roots in Canada every summer. Her family is large and full of love with unique diverse people who carry complicated histories. We join her for her summer as she and her cousin Autumn work together to learn as much as they can about their family's history, particularly around the forced assimilation of native children in boarding schools.
This was educational in a very accessible way, as well as brought in the true blessing of storytelling and learning from elders. I only wish it had been longer with a bit more time spent on the activities of summer.
