For me it is good to experience the classics, and find what is drawn from these "groud breaking" works.

In my opinion, this book shows very moralistic, christian, monochromatic thinking. I find the men to be abhorrent, the story a melodrama, the characterization of Bertha grotesque and certainly some kind of racist...

I understand how this novel shapes YA not-like-other-girls genre writing that is so incredibly popular. She's just "Plain Jane" who is naturally good, not TOO smart and not TOO pretty and a poor orphan but everything works out for her because she is SOOOO good. I think, if this novel were written in this day and age, my favorite book-tubers would rip it to shreds.

I do like this era of books referring to companionship as "society'. I like that.

I think there are elements of white feminism that are very attractive here, like being independently wealthy to the point of saying no to bullying men (Mr Rochester, her cousin), and prioritizing love over circumstance. These elements fall flat for me.

This novel was, to me, is a reflection of a heavily sheltered point-of-view, and the Piousness truly gave me a sour taste right unto the last line of the novel.

I appreciate its historical importance but I don't recommend this book in the "must read this lifetime" list.
