Clark and Division by Naomi Hirahara

This story about Japanese citizens in Chicago during WWII is a creative mix of mystery and historical fiction. It reminds the reader that ethnic discrimination and persecution is likely when a country is under stress (as the all countries are today). At first I was a little frustrated by the young narrator who is searching for a murderer. Her "voice" didn't seem right -- flaming with passion and questions and speculations within but expressing little to those around her -- using slang from both Japanese and English languages. But of course, these were my own prejudices -- expecting (wanting) a more "standard" narrative style. This is a good yarn with a lesson for readers like me about being open to a different way of looking at the world, not from across the globe, rather from just down the street.
