The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

5.0

First off, I picked this book off solely because of TikTok and BookTok expecting to be disappointed but I have to say I truly enjoyed reading this book, especially because I don’t enjoy reading fantasy novels because of the long world building I enjoyed the pace of “The Cruel Prince” and am honestly really surprised I liked it this much.

I was hooked because of the enemies to lovers trope because honestly who doesn’t love the tension between two enemies that have sexual tension and simply can’t hate each other at all. There is where my bias to liking Cardan began because I knew everyone loved him I decided I loved him too when the book started (sorry) but honestly there wasn’t a lot of romance or anything like that between them but GOD THE TENSION WAS SO DELICIOUS. I loved whenever they would glare at each other and whenever Jude challenged Cardan. So good. This brings me to the next thing I loved about this book.

The way Jude’s character is written inspires me to be a strong woman even if I’m weak and to continue fighting for what I want, because honestly she carried this book and I loved learning about this fantasy world and how humans stood. I admired her continuous strength and the way that the author still emphasized everything scared her but she continued on because she wanted to be more powerful. There were a lot of times that Jude appeared to be strong to the other person but inside she was anxious about what the other person saw but she persevered and continued on because she had a goal and I think thats very inspiring.

I’m so excited to continue reading this trilogy and to see what happens with Jude and Cardan and the kingdom. Overall, this book exceeded my expectations and was a fun adventurous read. I recommend this to anyone who loves character building and a bit of drama in the high ranks because hold on tight there is a lot of drama and politics.
