The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch

4.0

Scott Lynch is one of the handful of practitioners in contemporary fantasy who doesn't make big mistakes. "Republic" is a worthy successor of the previous two books in the "Gentleman Bastards" sequence but it is not the equal of the previous books. It's no spoiler to share that Sabetha returns and plays a prominent role in this book...and Sabetha is interesting. But "Lies" and "Red Seas" establish that the most important relationship in Locke's life is actually his relationship with Jean Tannen. And there's not sufficient room in this book for both Sabetha and Jean. There's not enough of Jean here. Hoping for more in the next book!
