Night's Edge
by Liz Kerin
fast-paced
Liz Kerin’s ‘Night’s Edge’ is a gripping, sun-soaked vampire novel that digs deep into the darkest corners of family, love, and survival. At its heart is Mia, whose entire life has been shaped by her mother Izzy’s hunger, a hunger for blood that has forced Mia to grow up fast, keep secrets, and live a life of constant vigilance.
What makes this story stand out is the way it explores a codependent mother daughter relationship like no other. Kerin captures the complexity of loving someone who is both protector and monster, and Mia’s struggle for independence feels raw and urgent. When she meets Jade, a musician who embodies the freedom she has always longed for, the possibility of escape finally seems real, even if it means risking everything.
The writing is fantastic, thrilling and fast paced, shifting seamlessly between 2010 and the present day to create a sharp tension that never lets up. I especially appreciated the fresh take on vampire lore and worldbuilding. The parallels to the pandemic were unexpected yet so unique, giving the novel an added layer of relevance without feeling forced.
Both heartbreaking and electrifying, ‘Night’s Edge’ is a story of love, control, and the desperate lengths we go to protect each other, even when it destroys us.
