I loved Annihilation. I struggled to find books that evoke a sense of fear, and annihilation was one that did. There was a lot of unravelling mystery, and the ending was a cliff hanger that I wanted to jump after.
However Authority did not deliver any kind of satisfaction. It was very slow, almost like starting again. New characters were introduced and new weird atrocities occurred. But very few questions were answered. The ending is just as open, but the journey did not deliver enough, and was not at all a satisfying journey.
I want to know what happens in the next books, but I don’t want to go through the slog of reading them to find out.
My friend described Annihilation as “all the fat trimmed out”. Well I think the second course served the fat.
