Defy the Stars by Claudia Gray
3.0
This was well written but I am not the target audience, and I wasn't able to fully get myself into the frame of mind of the target audience. To the right person - say teenage me or a teenage woman with similar tastes to teenage me - this would be a 4.5 or even 5 star novel and I would be rushing to get the second in the series.
We follow a human-like android who is almost human, and wants to learn how to be human (teenage Data, anyone?) and a rebel fighter who is willing to sacrifice her life and her future to protect the people she loves. They meet, and space hijinks ensue as both are wanted by Earth military and civilian forces and they try to stay one step ahead of their pursuers across multiple star systems. The twists and turns were all there, good story beats, good dialogue, good action, social commentary, and I want a short story with the nerd kids on the one planet - they were FUN! Despite the sum of the parts saying I should love this dearly, it was only average. If anything I described sounds like fun, you should check this out! I think this was me, not the book.
