The problem isn’t that it’s a homophobic warning about the evils of lesbianism; the gays love that shit! The problem is that half way through the author decided to give his tragic cautionary tale a boring “happy” ending. If he had gone full into the horror (lesbianism) of it all, his book ironically would have aged better.
