aw MAN i feel bad about this one. i think i came in with slightly different expectations for what it ended up being. i was hoping for a little more "a memory called empire" than the romance story i ended up with, which definitely colored my perception of the story. i was struggling to empathize with the way the narrative handled colonization, it just wasn't up to snuff with the political thriller i was wrongly assuming were going to be there. that being said, the romance story is lovely! it's cute, i like jainan and kiem, it reads a lot like a slowburn misunderstandings fic which makes sense because of their station.

i personally disliked the way that the exploration of empire and diplomacy came in second to the love story but i totally understand why people like it for the same reason. jainan was occasionally frustrating as well, in the same way that someone who has been a victim completely refuses to accept help, which makes him an interesting character to follow around despite me tearing my hair out and yelling no just let kiem help you!!! but of course he wouldn't. he has no reason to trust him.

so i had a good time, and i'll definitely crack open the next book but i'm not raring for it.
