The Butcher and the Wren by Alaina Urquhart
3.0

2 and 1/2 stars really, but rounding up because *I like her podcast*

The writing is pretty basic. It’s a paint by numbers crime story with a bit of jarring and unconvincing narrative. People don’t tend to talk this way and it brought me out of the story a bit.

The killer is a pretty typically baroque narcissist, our main character is an obvious self insert and there’s a lot of random side characters and bits of the story that don’t really need to be there or make any sense, they’re just page filler, and our characters husband doesn’t really seem to have a purpose except to just be around from time to time.

I’m not sure that the police would ever let someone so involved in a crime/ crime scene/ past event become part of the active investigation even if they are the ME, so it rings as unbelievable at times, too.

It’s not a bad book. It’s definitely not the best book. There’s absolutely worse and I wanted to get to the end so I could see what happened, so if you like Morbid definitely give it a read.
