Nature, longing and a summer of reflection

A Month in the Country by J.L. Carr.
A classic tale of a young man, scarred by the experience of WW1, Paschendale and whose wife has run off with another man.
Across a long, hot summer, imbued with the beauty of nature and the nature of a village of Yorkshire folk, Birkin is tasked with uncovering a wall painting in the rural church.
A gentle book, that is resonant of an England long ago, deeply religious, but conflicted too.
Would such a novel be published today? Devoid of 'action' and pace and conflict. Perhaps not. But we should be grateful that such a book, written in beautiful descriptive prose, was published and is still available for all to enjoy.
