I wanted to like this book more but ultimately was let down by the pacing and writing. I found the story fascinating and went down the rabbit hole, reading more about the events that inspired the author. But the writing itself was not it for me. It felt clumsy; the characters’ emotions roughly described rather than felt. The pacing was a little all over the place and confused me. I could not get behind Civil’s family-like attachment to the girls based on what I read of their relationship. Disappointing, sadly.
