The Queen's Resistance
by Rebecca Ross
3.5 stars.
While I didn’t love this book quite as much as The Queen’s Rising, it was still a satisfying continuation of the story. It starts right where we left off in the previous one, with the political fall-out from the return of the Kavanagh Queen.
Brianna and Cartier both have chapters written in their POV but sadly there was little of the romance that made the first book so enjoyable. The main characters have so few moments together that it did become more about the rivalries between houses and dealing with the Lannon traitors.
There was some confusion with the continued use of character code names rather than their real ones. Cartier was referred to as Aodhan Morgane by everyone except Brienna, but her adopted father was referred to as Jourdain by both of them despite his real name being Davin MacQuinn. She hadn’t known him as Jourdain as long as she’d known Cartier so it didn’t really make sense why she would continue thinking of him as such.
I enjoyed the storyline and the addition of several new characters including Neeve and Ewan, but I felt a lot of them were quite two dimensional and basic. The suspense was lacking as I saw a lot of the plot twists coming. There was perhaps not a lot of world-building either and the ending felt rushed. I’m not sure if this series is expected to continue or if The Queen’s Resistance was intended to be the conclusion, the last chapter seems like it could go either way. However I will read further books if there happens to be more.
