Midnight Teacher: Lilly Ann Granderson and Her Secret School by Janet Halfmann

4.5

This is a book to behold.  Granderson took upon herself a life-risking, daring job and did it to the maximum.  In helping others, she helped countless slaves escape to the north where they had a chance to make a life of their own.  Others of her students set up their own schools.  Reading and writing are powerful tools, and Granderson knew this.  That's why her story is so inspiring.

This biography was absolutely stunning to read.  Yet another history that I had no idea about--honestly, if I were a teacher, I'd like to teach her alongside figures such as Harriet Tubman, or if I were a professor, alongside those such as W.E.B. DuBois.

And those illustrations!  They're so realistic and you can just feel the suspense emanating from the pages--how else could they make you feel suspense from something that's already happened?  This was a fantastic, wonderful book, and I was proud to pass it onto my mom's classroom so that other, younger minds would have a chance to discover just what an amazing person Lilly Ann Granderson was.
