The DUFF: Designated Ugly Fat Friend
by Kody Keplinger
I picked this book up because I enjoyed the movie adaption. And honestly this is a very rare case of me enjoying the movie a lot more. I thought that the movie gave Bianca more complexity and likability. I also feel like the concept of the DUFF was handled with more tact and nuance in the movie? Idk I was kind of let down by this book given how much 'slut' and 'whore' were tossed around. I get that Bianca was going through some things but she just came off as really unlikable. Like I felt as though SHE was the mean girl of the story and that's not good if you're writing a high school, coming of age novel. Unless you're trying to tell the story from the POV of the mean girl. But Bianca was supposed to represent the average girl. She just came off as super judgmental and mean and it kind of ruined the story for me.
The only thing that I think the book did better was the love triangle with Bianca, Toby, and Wesley.
