Guardians of the Night by Alan Russell

3.0

This is book 2 in an ongoing detective series - I purchased the book from KindleFirst. While a pretty basic mystery whodunnit (actually two interwoven mysteries), the writing style was very readable and the addition of a smart "war dog" or police dog is a good touch and allows for some humorous moments as well as giving the detective the opportunity to "think out loud" as he talks to the dog. Sirius (the dog) is a good, strong character, as is the main character, Michael Gideon. There are some twists and turns, but not so many that the story loses its way.

Even though it's the 2nd in a series, it works just fine as a stand-alone book. He fills in enough back story so you're not floundering, but doesn't waste time retelling the first story (which I find really annoying when authors do that!). I'd recommend it for ease of reading, no grisly serial killer to catch, just a good strong mystery with a touch of humor.
