Okay, me getting into this book is entirely my own fault, for 'judging the book by its cover' and then be surprised it's not what you expected. I thought it's a fantasy - it's a sci-fi. Regardless, I listened to the whole thing. I grew attached to the characters very quickly. Also, the voice actor/s? They've done an amazing job and put so much emotions, especially into Inesa. Made listening a breeze.
The word building was very solid. It made me curious about the world, and actually quite sad, that it's a standalone book, it's a loss this world won't be explored more.
Also because it's a standalone book, I feel like we didn't have time to dig deep enough into the characters. They're the main focus of the book, but I wish we could see more of their psyche.
I think the romance was nice enough, but it also made me question did they fall for each other because they were these people, or would anybody work? I mean, I suppose Mel participated in other gauntlets and this didn't happen before, but there was also a special set of circumstances now, that allowed feelings to surface.
By the end, there were tons of unanswered questions. What happened to the father? Where does Mel come from? Is there really no world beyond the company? Will they come back together? Will Mel remember Inesa? I NEED ANSWERS, I NEED MORE, GIVE ME A HAPPY ENDING! Aaaaaa...
This is a dark, sad read - well, what did I expect from dystopian 🫩 As I said at the beginning - my fault.
